St. Mary's County History Day
What is History Day?
St. Mary’s County History Day is a local contest affiliated with Maryland History Day and National History Day. It is a district-level contest for middle and high school students to do in-depth research and create unique projects about each year’s theme in one of five categories: paper, exhibit, documentary, website, or performance. It is a chance for students to develop critical skills that they will use throughout their schooling and careers, and winners of the district contest will advance to the state-level contest.
Our students today are our leaders tomorrow. History Day nurtures students' academic abilities in areas such as research and analysis, critical thinking, project management, and public speaking; however, it also provides an opportunity for personal growth as they are encouraged to collaborate with their peers, reach out to community members and local experts, and build relationships both in and out of the classroom. By working to understand our shared past, these students are uniting us in the present, and becoming our future.
St. Mary's County History Day is brought to you by Historic Sotterley, in partnership with St. Mary's County Library and Maryland Humanities and the St. Mary's County Public Library
2027 Theme: Innovation in History: Impact, Influence, Change

Getting Started
- Choose your topic. Make sure it's something your are interested in that relates to this year's theme.
- Start your research: Find out what was happening before, during, and after the time your topic occurred. This is called historical context.
- Select a contest category: Create a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website.
- Write your process paper and annotated bibliography.
- Bring your project to St. Mary's County History Day! Winners will move on to Maryland History Day and compete to make it all the way to National History Day.
Get Involved
Become a Judge
We are always looking for volunteer judges to help us give projects the keen eye they deserve. Judges not only help decide which projects move on, they give students valuable feedback that they can use to improve future projects at school and next year's History Day contest alike.
If you'd like to be a History Day judge, please reach out to Katherine Humphries at edteam (at) sotterley.org for more information.
Become a Sponsor
St. Mary's County History Day is only possible with grants and sponsorships. Your gift could help us reach more students, give prize awards to winning projects, or provide snacks and refreshments on the day of the event to keep young minds sharp. In return, you'll receive recognition here on our website and on signage at the event.
For more information on becoming a History Day sponsor, reach out to Katherine Humphries at edteam (at) sotterley.org
