Virtual Tour of the Network to Freedom

June 16, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Sotterley is proud to be a partner of this virtual tour of the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom Trail in St. Mary’s County.
The path to freedom from slavery in our county took many forms. Join us on a virtual tour of our three officially designated National Park Network to Freedom sites. Learn the origin stories of enslaved peoples who escaped Sotterley Plantation during the War of 1812; the tragedies of those recaptured and held in the Old Jail, along with the allies trying to help them; and also the history of the ‘contraband camp’ of escaped enslaved peoples outside the Civil War POW camp at Point Lookout. Our local historians will be there to guide you along the Trail and answer all your questions. In addition to exploring our history, we’ll be joined by local author Wayne Karlin, who has woven these real life situations into a work of historical fiction entitled A Wolf by the Ears, which is set in St. Mary’s County in 1814.
Register Here! Must have a St. Mary’s County Library Card.
