Join us virtually on Wednesday, February 22nd, for the first of two connected events featuring two individuals who were transformative in shaping Historic Sotterley, their communities, and our State . February is both Black History Month and the birth month of Sotterley Descendant and Trustee Emeritus Agnes Kane Callum, so who better to begin our two-part series than this incredible woman. Through her genealogical research and her advocacy of how we must tell an honest and inclusive history, Agnes impacted not only Sotterley and how we tell our stories, but people and institutions throughout Maryland. Our panel for the evening will include Sotterley Descendants Martina Callum, Gwen Bankins, Jerome Spears, and Dante Eubanks, as well as Merideth Taylor and Sam Baldwin.
Agnes Kane Callum was born on February 24, 1925. In her lifetime she did extensive and painstaking genealogical research, published many books documenting the genealogy of enslaved persons in Maryland, and was a founding member of both the Baltimore chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society and the Commission to Coordinate the Study, Commemoration, and Impact of Slavery’s History and Legacy in Maryland. In her time as a member of the Historic Sotterley Board of Trustees, Agnes helped save and preserve Sotterley so that it could continue to share its history with the world.
In April, we will host the second part of this series to remember the legacy of John Hanson Briscoe, who, together with Agnes, helped to save Sotterley.
