SUMMARY:Partner Event - Historically Speaking: George Plater: St. Mary's Forgotten Patriot
DESCRIPTION:March 26\, 2026 – David Brown\, adjunct professor\, Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies\, Johns Hopkins University \nWith over thirty-three years as a Foreign Service Officer\, David Brown unfolds the story of this largely unknown patriot. George Plater was born and raised at Sotterley Plantation and is counted among the earliest of Maryland’s supporters of Independence. He represented Maryland in the Continental Congress from 1778 to 1780\, and briefly served as the sixth Governor of Maryland in 1791 and 1792. \nIn this 250th Year of American Independence\, encounter the story of a modest and\, for our times\, flawed man whose history deserves telling. \nThis event is being held live at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in partnership with the Center for the Study of Democracy and St. Mary’s County Historical Society. It is being offered as a free livestream thanks to a MD250 grant received by Historic Sotterley. \n  \nRegister to attend in-person at SMCM\nRegister to attend virtually\n  \nThe in-person portion of this event will be at: \nDaugherty-Palmer Commons \nSt Mary’s college of Maryland \n47720 College Dr. \nSt Mary’s City\, MD 20686
