SUMMARY:Legends & Lore Auditions
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 6 & Friday\, August 7\, 2026 – “Legends & Lore: In a Time of Revolution” is set in October\, 1776. It is a desperate time for the recently declared independent nation\, when families were split and the success of the revolution was far from certain. General Washington is staging a hurried retreat from New York\, fighting more to keep the army from disintegrating than to bring the rampaging British to battle. In Southern Maryland\, the Americans have stood off a minor British incursion in the Battle of St. George’s Island\, but uncertainty and divided loyalties are as common as patriotic fever.  In the first of the three scenes\, two British spies have landed near Sotterley to encouraged the enslaved to desert to join the fight against the patriots. A young woman suspects their plot. In the second\, Washington and his Aide-De-Camp Tench Tilghman review the reasons for and possible outcomes of the revolution and discuss the leadership needed for the new country. In the third\, cousins duel over loyalty to Britain or support for the new county. A man is killed and a family secret is revealed.  The heroism and contradictions of a pivotal moment in history are explored. \n  \n\n\n\n\nAudition to become a part of bringing this tumultuous time to life at Historic Sotterley through two exciting weekends of Legends & Lore tours in October. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuditions will take place at the Leonardtown branch of St. Mary’s County Public Library. 23630 Hayden Farm Ln\, Leonardtown\, MD 20650 \n  \nPlease prepare a 1-minute classical monologue\, Shakespeare suggested but not required. DESCRIPTION:August 7 – 9\, 2026 – For centuries\, humans have relied on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries for transportation and trade. From providing high-traffic trade routes to providing an avenue for the pursuit of freedom\, these iconic waterways defined an entire region. This weekend\, Historic Sotterley is offering its guided tours with additional notes on the way the Chesapeake played a crucial role in shaping history. \nTours will be offered on Friday & Saturday at 10:30 am\, 12:30 pm\, and 2:00 pm and on Sunday at 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm. For more information about our hours and pricing\, check our visit page. \nHistoric Sotterley’s guided tours allow visitors an intimate perspective of the lives and cultures of those that owned\, lived\, and worked in the historic Manor House\, enslaved or free\, over three centuries of American history. These sessions are designed to strengthen personal leadership while exploring practical approaches from leaders who are shaping the future of public history\, interpretation\, preservation\, and community healing. But this version of the story is only half the truth—and perhaps not even the most interesting half. In this riveting program\, historian and author Richard Bell invites audiences to rediscover the Revolution as a world war that unleashed chaos\, opportunity\, and transformation across six continents. From the sugar fields of the Caribbean to the court of the King of Mysore\, from refugee camps on the Canadian frontier to political uprisings in Sierra Leone and Peru\, the war that gave birth to the United States was never simply America’s own. It was a seismic global event that redrew maps\, toppled hierarchies\, catalyzed migration\, and accelerated new movements for liberty—and for empire. \nIn this program\, Bell traces the far-flung reverberations of the war through the lives of the people it displaced\, empowered\, or destroyed. Participants will encounter a Native matriarch struggling to preserve a transatlantic military alliance\, a Prussian officer reinventing himself in a foreign army\, and a Boston schoolteacher shipwrecked thousands of miles from home. Along the way\, Bell explores how the Revolution stirred a transoceanic refugee crisis\, ignited antislavery activism\, and inspired uprisings from Ireland to India. The program offers a bold new framework for understanding the Revolutionary War not as a tidy founding moment but as a sprawling\, high-stakes struggle fought on land and sea\, shaped by commerce\, diplomacy\, propaganda\, and contingency. SUMMARY:Stories of Resistance and Resilience Themed Tours
DESCRIPTION:September 25 – 27\, 2026 – September is Underground Railroad Month\, and although Sotterley has yet to discover any direct connections to the Underground Railroad\, we do have stories of the pursuit of freedom and the self-emancipation of enslaved individuals. This weekend\, Historic Sotterley will be offering its guided tours with an extra focus on the stories of strength and resilience that resulted in individuals finding their freedom. \nTours will be offered on Friday & Saturday at 10:30 am\, 12:30 pm\, and 2:00 pm and on Sunday at 12:30 pm and 2:00 p]m. For more information about our hours and pricing\, check our visit page. \nHistoric Sotterley’s guided tours allow visitors an intimate perspective of the lives and cultures of those that owned\, lived\, and worked in the historic Manor House\, enslaved or free\, over three centuries of American history. Tours this weekend will have an extra focus on the history of slavery at Sotterley and the individuals that self-emancipated despite the unfathomable challenges. \nThe tour is on the ground floor and is approximately 45 minutes in length. The 18th Century Manor House doorways may not accommodate all wheelchairs or walkers in some rooms of the house. Please call in advance for full access details. \nAfter the tour\, Sotterley offers a Visitor Experience Center with a museum shop\, beautiful trails\, expansive gardens\, access to a quiet creek\, and additional exhibits to explore and learn from. Historic Sotterley is a “Leave No Trace” site\, so please be prepared to pack out any trash and leftover food when you leave.

Registration is required. \n  \nRegistration coming soon\n  \nMarc Schindler has spent more than 35 years advancing the well‑being of young people through leadership roles in youth justice\, nonprofit management\, advocacy\, and philanthropy. His career includes serving as a public defender\, a national civil rights attorney\, Executive Director of the Justice Policy Institute\, and a partner at Venture Philanthropy Partners. He has also taught at George Washington University and American University and authored more than two dozen research publications. Most recently\, he served as Assistant Secretary and Chief of Staff for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services\, helping to steer the state’s youth justice system toward a more developmental\, community‑centered model. \nAt the Georgetown Center for Youth Justice\, Schindler is a Research Professor of the Practice and Senior Fellow and leads Forgotten Children\, a new national initiative dedicated to restoring dignity to incarcerated youth buried in unmarked graves\, while also supporting programs such as the Public Information Officers Learning Collaborative and the Transforming Juvenile Probation Certificate Program. Earlier in his career\, he played a key role in reforming Washington\, DC’s youth justice system as Interim Director\, Chief of Staff\, and General Counsel of DYRS. A Yale‑educated political scientist with a law degree from the University of Maryland\, Marc lives in Washington\, D.C.\, with his wife and is the proud father of two college‑aged children.
