SUMMARY:Sotterley Presents: People and Perspectives with Donald Shomette
DESCRIPTION:Donald Shomette\nAuthor\, Archaeologist\, and Award-winning Historian\nThe Civil War in Southern Maryland: The Forgotten Conflict\nWednesday\, November 2nd\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.\n____________________________________________________________________________\n \nNote: This is a HYBRID EVENT! If you are local to Southern Maryland and interested in attending in person\, please register on our EventBrite instead! In-Person Space is limited\, so register soon.  \nClick here to Register to Attend Virtually!\nClick Here to Register to Attend In Person!\nOn November 2\, noted historian and author Donald Grady Shomette will present a fascinating illustrated lecture on his most recent award winning book Anaconda’s Tail: The Civil War on the Potomac Frontier 1861-1865\, the hitherto unwritten and all but forgotten chronicle of that devastating conflict as it was played out in Southern Maryland. It is a hitherto largely ignored account of the guerilla war\, spies and smugglers\, invasions and naval battles\, heroism and chicanery\, slavery and emancipation\, and the political intrigue that swept across the countryside of Maryland’s five southernmost counties that would influence the course of the war itself. It is a story that will place for the first time Southern Maryland’s critical role in not simply speaking to the well trod accounts of the Lincoln assassination and the escape of John Wilkes Booth or the ill-famed Point Lookout prisoner of war death camp\, but in the very context of both the major Northern and Southern war efforts and their consequences. It is a narrative well worth visiting. \nDonald Grady Shomette completed his undergraduate work in graphic design and art history at the Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, New York. In 1997 he was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Baltimore for contributions to history\, science and the arts. His early career included stints at the Wall Street Journal and Grolier Publishing in New York City\, and with the Washington Post in Washington\, D.C. For more than two decades he served on the staff of the Library of Congress and simultaneously as director of Nautical Archaeological Associates\, a non-profit research organization\, which conducted\, among others\, the first underwater archaeological surveys in the states of Maryland\, New Jersey\, and Arkansas. \nAs a historian Shomette has served as a cultural resources management consultant for numerous states\, various agencies of the U.S. Government\, museums\, universities\, and non-profit research establishments. As a marine archaeologist he has worked in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Western Europe under the sponsorship of such institutions as the National Geographic Society\, the National Park Service\, the U.S. Navy\, and various educational foundations and museums. \nShomette is the author of twenty books\, the most recent being Navigational Hazards (2020) and Anaconda’s Tail: Civil War on the Potomac Frontier\, 1861-1865 (2019). He is a contributor to three international encyclopedias and five anthologies of history and archaeology. His many scientific and popular articles have appeared in such publications as National Geographic Magazine\, History and Technology\, Sea History\, and the American Neptune. He has appeared in documentaries on the History Channel\, the Discovery Channel\, the National Geographic Channel\, Maryland Public Television\, NBC\, CBS and the BBC. For more than a decade he served as a lecturer for the Smithsonian Journeys Program in the Great Lakes and along the entirety of the North American Atlantic Seaboard. \nThrice winner of the prestigious John Lyman Book Award for Best American Maritime History\, and twice winner of the Marion V. Brewington Award for Best U.S. Naval History\, Shomette was also honored with the Calvert Prize\, the highest award in Maryland for historic preservation. He is a resident of Calvert County\, Maryland. \nThis presentation is made possible by the generous support of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. \nFREE EVENT for the public – Advance registration required. \nClick here to Register to Attend Virtually!\nClick Here to Register to Attend In Person!

SUMMARY:Forward Together: The Legacy of Agnes Kane Callum
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n  \nJoin us virtually on Wednesday\, February 22nd\, for the first of two connected events featuring two individuals who were transformative in shaping Historic Sotterley\, their communities\, and our State . February is both Black History Month and the birth month of Sotterley Descendant and Trustee Emeritus Agnes Kane Callum\, so who better to begin our two-part series than this incredible woman. Through her genealogical research and her advocacy of how we must tell an honest and inclusive history\, Agnes impacted not only Sotterley and how we tell our stories\, but people and institutions throughout Maryland. Our panel for the evening will include Sotterley Descendants Martina Callum\, Gwen Bankins\, Jerome Spears\, and Dante Eubanks\, as well as Merideth Taylor and Sam Baldwin. \nAgnes Kane Callum was born on February 24\, 1925. In her lifetime she did extensive and painstaking genealogical research\, published many books documenting the genealogy of enslaved persons in Maryland\, and was a founding member of both the Baltimore chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society and the Commission to Coordinate the Study\, Commemoration\, and Impact of Slavery’s History and Legacy in Maryland. In her time as a member of the Historic Sotterley Board of Trustees\, Agnes helped save and preserve Sotterley so that it could continue to share its history with the world. \nIn April\, we will host the second part of this series to remember the legacy of John Hanson Briscoe\, who\, together with Agnes\, helped to save Sotterley. \n

SUMMARY:Forward Together: The Legacy of John Hanson Briscoe
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually on Wednesday\, April 19th\, for the second of our two connected events featuring two individuals who were transformative in shaping Historic Sotterley\, their communities\, and our State. April was the birth month of Trustee Emeritus John Hanson Briscoe\, former Maryland Circuit Court Judge\, Maryland Speaker of the House\, and staunch advocate for Historic Sotterley. This event will feature a panel to discuss his life\, his work\, and the impact he had on Sotterley and our community. Our panel for the evening will include Jan Briscoe\, Sam Baldwin\, the Honorable James Kenney and Michael Whitson. Senator Ben Cardin has also been invited to join the event to share his remembrances of the man he knew so well. \nJohn Hanson Briscoe was born on April 10\, 1934. In his lifetime as a St. Mary’s County resident\, he served as a Member and Speaker of the House of Delegates and County Administrative Judge\, and served on many County\, State and National commissions and boards for the betterment of our communities and their citizens. He always advocated the need to remember our past with historical preservation\, to protect and conserve our natural resources and environment\, and was instrumental in the passage of state civil rights laws. In his time on the Historic Sotterley Board of Trustees\, he advocated strongly for the preservation of Sotterley so that it could continue to share its history with the world. \nJohn worked closely with Agnes Kane Callum\, who was honored in part one of our series in February\, and their friendship and mutual respect laid the foundation for Historic Sotterley’s Decendants Project today. Together this extraordinary pair created a powerful duo who helped to save Sotterley\, but just as importantly\, worked to ensure that this irreplaceable site tells an inclusive and honest history. \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Whispers from the Water: Ancestral Memories from the Clotilda
DESCRIPTION:On April 29\, 2022\, St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Historic Sotterley are partnering to present a screening of the powerful 2022 Netflix film\, “Descendant\,” to our community. The screening will be followed by a panel that will discuss the film\, how it showcases previously undiscovered historical findings\, as well as the long-lasting negative economic\, environmental and social impacts the slave trade continues to have on Africatown and our nation. \nSet in the small Alabama community of Africatown\, the documentary follows the descendants of the survivors of the Clotilda\, the last known slave ship to transport human beings as cargo from Africa to America. On July 9\, 1860\, more than 100 captive Africans were illicitly brought to the shores of Mobile\, Alabama\, under cover of darkness. The international slave trade had been made illegal in the US in 1808\, but human trafficker Timothy Meaher made a bet that he could get around the law with his ship. After the illegal voyage\, the ship was burned and scuttled in Mobile Cay in an attempt to destroy the evidence. Today\, the residents of Africatown\, just north of Mobile\, count the Clotilda survivors among their ancestors. Uncovering the truth about the Clotilda\, which was a centuries-old open secret\, was pursued by marine archaeologists to confirm the ship’s existence and bring its stories to the surface. \nThe panel will feature Jocelyn Davis\, a direct descendant of Clotilda survivor Charlie Lewis and lifelong resident of Africatown\, as well as Kamau Sadiki who was featured in the documentary for his work as a member of the dive team Divers with a Purpose and who is the President of the National Association of Black Scuba Divers that identified the Clotilda. Joining the panel will be Dr. Susan Langley\, the Maryland State Underwater Archaeologist and Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at St. Mary’s College of Maryland; Dr. Liza Gijanto\, Associate Professor of Anthropology at St. Mary’s College of Maryland; Kelsy Bush\, Historic Sotterley Descendant and Board Member as well as the Community Affairs Liaison of St. Mary’s College of Maryland; and Gwen Bankins\, Historic Sotterley Descendant and Secretary of the Board of Trustees. \nThe event will be held in the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Nancy R. & Norton T. Dodge Performing Arts Center\, 47855 College Dr.\, St. Mary’s City\, MD with doors opening at 1:00 pm. The film begins at 1:30 pm\, followed by an intermission and then the panel discussion approximately at 3:45 p.m. This event is being held free of charge to our community\, though tickets are required. \n  \nRegister Here\n  \nPhoto of Kamau Sadiki courtesy of Wayne Lawrence.

SUMMARY:Heritage Healing Prayer Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, May 6th\, at 9:00 a.m. as we come together to pray for all Descendants’ journeys to understand and connect with their ancestors at historic sites\, and to honor their ancestors’ memories and learn from their experiences.  This event seeks to release the pain of past wounds\, aid in forgiveness\, and provide inspiration to move forward with courage while exploring the lives\, traditions\, of those who lived on the land before us. \nWe are holding this prayer circle at the beginning of our guided tour season to honor the memory of those who came to Historic Sotterley during the middle passage and remember the lives of those who perished on the journey. This event is free and open to the public\, but if you’d like to stay and purchase a guided or self-guided tour of Sotterley after the event\, you are welcome to do so at the Visitor Center.\n \nHistoric Sotterley is proud to be a UNESCO Site of Memory for the Routes of the Enslaved\, Middle Passage Port Marker’s Project Site\, and a partner in the Return Passage Initiative.

SUMMARY:Sotterley Presents: People and Perspectives with Imani Black
DESCRIPTION:Our next installment of Sotterley Presents: People and Perspectives will take place virtually on May 24th. The seafood industry has rapidly grown over the last few decades\, while natural seafood resources have slowly decreased. Imani Black\, founder of Minorities in Aquaculture\, will explore the opportunities presented by aquaculture\, farming seafood like oysters in a sustainable way. \nImani Black was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Chestertown. She has always had a passion for restoration and conservation since she was a young girl and found great interest in the rapidly growing shellfish aquaculture industry\, after completing an aquaculture training program at Virginia Institute of Marine Science in 2016. Since then\, Imani has worked on oyster farms\, nurseries and hatcheries along the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland. From 2018 to 2020\, she was the Assistant Hatchery Manager for Hoopers Island Oyster Company\, having the opportunity to work in all aspects of shellfish growout. \nThrough her love for her career\, Imani founded Minorities In Aquaculture\, a nonprofit organization that strives to empower and support women of color in the aquaculture industry by educating women of traditional watermen legacy and heritage in coastal communities while providing opportunities such as paid internship\, technical skills training and career development resources in the new wave of commercial fisheries. In addition to developing the nonprofit\, Imani is also pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science researching the historical minority engagement in commercial fisheries in the Chesapeake Bay. \n  \nRegister Here!
