SUMMARY:Speaker Series - Christy Coleman - Going Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The Boeing Company has generously sponsored the Speaker Series at Sotterley for the past 13 years.\n\n\n\nChristy Coleman\nExecutive Director\, Jamestown – Yorktown Foundation\nThe Power of US: What Happens When Historical Narratives Are Corrected\nWednesday\, October 14\, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. \n____________________________________________________________________________\nPlease click here to REGISTER FOR THIS WEBINAR \nThe history we teach has evolved over time and the reason is simple\, we have changed. With those changes come a responsibility to explore what history can teach us about the current state of affairs. When that history is incomplete\, or deliberately leaves out elements of conflict\, we fail to get an accurate view that causes far more harm than good. As a public historian\, Coleman feels her job is to lay out stories you may not have considered or heard before and provide an environment where people can learn and explore. \nFREE WEBINAR for the public – The Boeing Company has generously sponsored the Speaker Series at Sotterley for the past 13 years. Advance registration required. \nThis year’s speaker series will be offered virtually and some may also be offered in person depending on community guidelines. Links will be available the week of the event. Stay tuned for updated hosting information. \nPlease click here to REGISTER FOR THIS WEBINAR

SUMMARY:Black Men in White Coats Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we watch and then discuss Black Men in White Coats\, a new documentary from Dr. Dale Okorodudu.\n\nBlack Men in White Coats Viewing Flyer\n\n\nRegister with an email address to receive an emailed code to watch the film. You can watch the film on any device with an internet connection at any time between February 26 and March 2: https://www.indiescreening.com/…/black-men-in-white… \n\n\nFewer black men applied to medical school in 2014 than in 1978 and black men have the lowest life expectancy in the United States. With only 2% of American doctors being black men\, this comes as no surprise. This documentary dissects the systemic barriers preventing black men from becoming medical doctors and the consequences on society at large. \n\n\n\nHealth care accounts for nearly 20% of the United State’s GDP and a significant portion of that is driven by disparities in a system that lacks diverse physicians. What if we had a medical workforce that actually reflected our patient population? What challenges do our black boys face? Who are their role models? Why is it easier to visualize a black man in an orange jumpsuit than it is in a white coat? What’s happening in society that more black women are becoming doctors while black men are stagnant? \n\n\nThis film screening was funded by the Friends of the St. Mary’s County Library.

SUMMARY:Common Ground: Looking to the Past to Reclaim our Future by John B. King Jr.
DESCRIPTION:John B. King Jr. \nCEO of The Education Trust\, Founder of Strong Future Maryland\, Former Secretary of Education to President Barack Obama\nLooking to the Past to Reclaim our Future\nWednesday\, March 31st\, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.\n____________________________________________________________________________\nClick here to Register!\nJohn B. King Jr. recounts the multi-generational journey that led from his great-grandfather being enslaved in Maryland to King serving as President Barack Obama’s Secretary of Education\, and explores the ways in which our past can inform the paths we choose to take in the future – both as individuals and a community. King’s story underlines the importance of investing in those who have too often been marginalized\, underserved\, and forgotten\, especially as we begin to emerge from the pandemic that only further underlined deeply-rooted racial and economic inequities in our society. \nThis event is made possible by the generous support of Destination Southern Maryland (Southern Maryland Heritage Area) and the Maryland Heritage Area Authority.\nFREE WEBINAR for the public – Advance registration required. \nThis year’s Common Ground will be offered virtually.  \nClick here to Register!

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: The Nine Lives of Benjamin Franklin by Dr. Richard Bell
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard Bell \nProfessor of History and the University of Maryland\nThe Nine Lives of Benjamin Franklin \nWednesday\, April 14th\, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.\n____________________________________________________________________________\nClick here to Register!\nFranklin’s genius is a puzzle. Born the tenth son of a humble family of puritan candle-makers in Boston in 1706\, Franklin’s rise to the front ranks of science\, engineering\, and invention was as unexpected as it was meteoric. Here is a man with only two years of proper schooling who later received honorary degrees from Harvard\, Yale\, Oxford\, and St. Andrews as well as the eighteenth-century equivalent of a Nobel Prize for Physics. Like his hero Isaac Newton\, Franklin’s great genius lay in optimizing\, in tinkering\, in improving\, and in never being satisfied with the world as he knew it. In this talk with University of Maryland historian Richard Bell we will examine many of Franklin’s ideas to make life simpler\, cheaper\, and easier for himself and everyone else. It turns out that those ideas encompassed not only natural science and engineering\, but also all sorts of public works\, civic improvements\, political trail-blazing\, and fresh\, new business ideas.\n\nDr. Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and is author of the new book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which is shortlisted for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has won more than a dozen teaching awards\, including the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching\, the highest honor for teaching faculty in the Maryland state system. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award. He serves as a Trustee of the Maryland Center for History and Culture\, as an elected member of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts\, and as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. \nFREE WEBINAR for the public – Advance registration required. \nThis year’s speaker series will be offered virtually. \nClick here to Register!
