SUMMARY:Sotterley Presents: People and Perspectives - Hidden in Plain Sight with Matthew Webster
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Webster\nExecutive Director of the Grainger Department of Architectural Preservation and Research for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation\nHidden in Plain Sight: The Discovery and Restoration of Williamsburg’s Bray School\nWednesday\, September 14th\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.\n____________________________________________________________________________\nClick here to Register! \nOn September 29\, 1760 the Associates of Dr. Bray in London established a school for the education of enslaved and free Black children in Williamsburg\, Virginia. The school was one of the original four\, with others located in Providence\, New York\, and Philadelphia. The school would operate until 1774 when a combination of the passing of teacher Ann Wager and increasing tensions with England caused the school to close. The building now stands as the earliest surviving school dedicated to Black education in North America. This lecture will discuss the complexity of the history and research that allowed the building to remain “hidden in plain sight”\, revealed its identity\, and the restoration efforts at the Bray school today.\n\nMatthew Webster is the Executive Director of the Grainger Department of Architectural Preservation and Research for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In this role he oversees the preservation of 603 structures in the National Landmark Historic Area\, the 18\,000 piece architectural fragment collection\, architectural research\, and historic interiors. Prior to Williamsburg he served as Director of Preservation at Drayton Hall (1754) in Charleston\, South Carolina. Webster sits on the board of Falmouth Heritage Renewal in Falmouth\, Jamaica\, and on the advisory boards of Preservation Virginia\, Stratford Hall and Menokin\, in Virginia and Drayton Hall in South Carolina. He has consulted on projects throughout the eastern United States as well as internationally. He has taught at the University of Virginia and University of Mary Washington and lectures frequently on preservation\, architecture\, and history topics. \nThis presentation is made possible by the generous support of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. \nFREE WEBINAR for the public – Advance registration required. \nClick here to Register!

SUMMARY:Paying it Forward with Growing for Good - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Growing for Good event CANCELLED for October 1st and 2nd\, but Pumpkin Painting is Still a Go!\n  \nHistoric Sotterley is sad to announce that we need to cancel our volunteer Growing for Good event this weekend.  We were excited to have volunteers join us to sort\, box\, and distribute food to our food pantries\, but our wonderful partners in the food pantries have let us know that many need to close due to the impending storm.  Because of this\, we will not have a way to distribute the food to those in need while it is still fresh. \n  \nOn a happy note\, our Pop-up event of mini-pumpkin painting for our youngest visitors is still a go!  Check www.sotterley.org details and more information. \n  \nGrowing for Good will continue in the upcoming weeks\, however\, and we will have produce that needs to be picked\, sorted\, and distributed throughout the month of October.  We will have some new dates when we will be doing this once we can coordinate with our partners in Farmers Feeding Southern Maryland.  If you are interested in helping us and are not already on our volunteer list\, please email Kim at officemanager@sotterley.org\, and she will add you to her volunteer email list so that you will know our plans. \n  \nWe are so grateful to our generous community for helping us throughout the year with Growing for Good\, and we hope that you can join us on our rescheduled dates as well as in the future.  Together\, we can come together to not only help support those who need it most\, but we can do our part to help build a better community. \n\nSaturday\, October 1\, 2022\nSunday\, October 2\, 2022\nboth days 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm\nEarlier in the year our generous community stepped forward to help us plant acres of vegetables which Sotterley earmarked for donation to our local food banks and food pantries. After harvesting the goods\, the time has come to share the goodies! Everyone willing to volunteer will be helping us “Pay it Forward”\, directly supporting families in need in our community. \nWe need the extra hands to help sort and box the produce which is then to be picked up. Hopefully on the day you offer your help\, we will be able to complete the task at hand for this wonderful project. This task at hand is recommeded for ages 12 and up. \nSign up to Volunteer Here!\nPlease sign up in advance so we know how many volunteers to expect.  Head towards the Visitor Center and follow the “Growing for Good” directional signage down to a part of the site you probably didn’t even know existed. \nNote: We recommend hats\, gloves\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, shoes and clothes you are not afraid to get dirty! \n  \nPlease plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your start time to check-in. \nIf you have any questions or need assistance in any way\, please do not hesitate to contact Kim Husick at officemanager@sotterley.org or 301-373-2280 x. 1105 \nGrowing for Good \nGrowing Together! \n

SUMMARY:Sotterley Presents: People and Perspectives with Donald Shomette
DESCRIPTION:Donald Shomette\nAuthor\, Archaeologist\, and Award-winning Historian\nThe Civil War in Southern Maryland: The Forgotten Conflict\nWednesday\, November 2nd\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.\n____________________________________________________________________________\n \nNote: This is a HYBRID EVENT! If you are local to Southern Maryland and interested in attending in person\, please register on our EventBrite instead! In-Person Space is limited\, so register soon.  \nClick here to Register to Attend Virtually!\nClick Here to Register to Attend In Person!\nOn November 2\, noted historian and author Donald Grady Shomette will present a fascinating illustrated lecture on his most recent award winning book Anaconda’s Tail: The Civil War on the Potomac Frontier 1861-1865\, the hitherto unwritten and all but forgotten chronicle of that devastating conflict as it was played out in Southern Maryland. It is a hitherto largely ignored account of the guerilla war\, spies and smugglers\, invasions and naval battles\, heroism and chicanery\, slavery and emancipation\, and the political intrigue that swept across the countryside of Maryland’s five southernmost counties that would influence the course of the war itself. It is a story that will place for the first time Southern Maryland’s critical role in not simply speaking to the well trod accounts of the Lincoln assassination and the escape of John Wilkes Booth or the ill-famed Point Lookout prisoner of war death camp\, but in the very context of both the major Northern and Southern war efforts and their consequences. It is a narrative well worth visiting. \nDonald Grady Shomette completed his undergraduate work in graphic design and art history at the Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, New York. In 1997 he was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Baltimore for contributions to history\, science and the arts. His early career included stints at the Wall Street Journal and Grolier Publishing in New York City\, and with the Washington Post in Washington\, D.C. For more than two decades he served on the staff of the Library of Congress and simultaneously as director of Nautical Archaeological Associates\, a non-profit research organization\, which conducted\, among others\, the first underwater archaeological surveys in the states of Maryland\, New Jersey\, and Arkansas. \nAs a historian Shomette has served as a cultural resources management consultant for numerous states\, various agencies of the U.S. Government\, museums\, universities\, and non-profit research establishments. As a marine archaeologist he has worked in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Western Europe under the sponsorship of such institutions as the National Geographic Society\, the National Park Service\, the U.S. Navy\, and various educational foundations and museums. \nShomette is the author of twenty books\, the most recent being Navigational Hazards (2020) and Anaconda’s Tail: Civil War on the Potomac Frontier\, 1861-1865 (2019). He is a contributor to three international encyclopedias and five anthologies of history and archaeology. His many scientific and popular articles have appeared in such publications as National Geographic Magazine\, History and Technology\, Sea History\, and the American Neptune. He has appeared in documentaries on the History Channel\, the Discovery Channel\, the National Geographic Channel\, Maryland Public Television\, NBC\, CBS and the BBC. For more than a decade he served as a lecturer for the Smithsonian Journeys Program in the Great Lakes and along the entirety of the North American Atlantic Seaboard. \nThrice winner of the prestigious John Lyman Book Award for Best American Maritime History\, and twice winner of the Marion V. Brewington Award for Best U.S. Naval History\, Shomette was also honored with the Calvert Prize\, the highest award in Maryland for historic preservation. He is a resident of Calvert County\, Maryland. \nThis presentation is made possible by the generous support of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. \nFREE EVENT for the public – Advance registration required. \nClick here to Register to Attend Virtually!\nClick Here to Register to Attend In Person!
