Education is one of the most
important aspects of Sotterley’s mission and touches
almost everything that a visitor will encounter.
Whether an exhibit, a tour, 2nd Saturday Series
Program, a field trip, or an event, the education of
students and visitors about Sotterley’s history and
culture takes place before, during, and after a
visit to Sotterley Plantation.

Children learn and play the
old-fashioned way, with self-direction, imagination,
creativity, and time flexibility. Activities
are based on children's choices and interests,
development of new skills, and site conditions,
using a small group and very hands-on format.
Sotterley serves as a resource for students,
teachers, and other professionals in collaboration
with other museums and organizations to offer
training and interaction that can be incorporated by
the participant in a practical way to enrich lives.
